NEC’S ABREU FELLOWS PROGRAM TO TRAIN FUTURE LEADERS IN EL SISTEMA, VENEZUELA’S MUSIC FOR SOCIAL CHANGE MODEL
The year-long Abreu Fellows Program at New England Conservatory provides tuition-free instruction and a needs-based living stipend for 10 outstanding postgraduate musicians and music educators, “passionate for their art and for social justice,” who seek to guide the development of El Sistema programs in the US and beyond. Pending confirmation of funding, the second group of Abreu Fellows will begin their training in Boston in October 2010. The first semester includes visits to El Sistema-inspired startup programs in the US and a series of intensive workshops centered on both the musical and organizational components of the El Sistema approach to music education. The second semester will include a two-month period of observation, participation and study in Venezuela,followed by a three-week guided internship at a select program in the US.
