█ Rehearsal Video 1 http://bit.ly/JGoviasRVid1
Live video of a keynote address at the “Reframing El Sistema” conference hosted by the University of Maryland Baltimore County in April 2016. The orchestra is a pick-up group composed of students of UMBC and UNC Charlotte, sightreading various repertoire in a demonstration of socially oriented
rehearsal techniques that devolve agency to the musicians without the need for verbal discussion. No musician of the group onstage had rehearsed any of the material prior to the session.
█ Rehearsal Video 2 http://bit.ly/JGoviasRVid2
This video was filmed with the Youth Orchestra of the State of Bahia, Brazil. It demonstrates the unique teaching and rehearsal methods I have developed that push technically excellent orchestras to the next level. I am not telling the musicians how to play: I am actively structuring the environment
to allow them to hear and identify the many problems with the section, and resolve them using their own creativity and musical insight. The result is a complete transformation in the sound and style of the orchestra. The change is not restricted to bow stroke, articulation, balance and “ensemble” –
there is a total shift in the mentality of the group and elevation of their playing to the point of cohesion that could never be achieved through typical (and typically negative) rehearsal means.
